Additional UL certification for Lifoflex FLAM TPE compounds


Müller Kunststoffe, the German arm of the HEXPOL TPE group, has extended the UL certification on the Lifoflex FLAM range of flame-retardant TPE compounds. Lifoflex UV FLAM 60600 has the Yellow Card certification for UL94 V0 at 3.0mm thickness. The Yellow Card certification is for all colours.

The Lifoflex FLAM compounds are halogen and antimony free, they do not produce corrosive and toxic gases such as hydrochloric acid or aromatic bromine in case of fire. They do not form dioxins and furans during recycling and incineration. Lifoflex FLAM TPE compounds therefore conform to WEEE directive (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) which states that electronic and electrical equipment containing brominated flame retardants have to be separated before the electronic waste can be processed. They also comply with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive for electrical and electronic equipment which states that new products are not allowed to contain polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

The UL 94 Vertical Burn (V) test is the most common for TPE materials in electrical equipment. It is a measure of the vertical flame propagation as well as the drip behaviour of a sample at a particular thickness. The test includes three classifications - V0, V1 and V2, V0 being the hardest to achieve. A test bar is supported at one end in a vertical position. A burner flame is applied to the free end for two ten second intervals, separated by the time it takes for flaming to cease after the first application.

Peter Ryzko, manager at Müller Kunststoffe commented “With the Lifoflex FLAM TPE compounds our objective is the development of flame retardant TPE compounds that are completely free of both halogens and antimony trioxide. These should also meet demanding flammability specifications whilst as far as possible retaining the properties of standard TPEs.”

Lifoflex FLAM grades are available in hardnesses ranging from 30 to 90 Shore A. They offer good adhesion to thermoplastics such as PP and PE for overmoulding and co-extrusion applications. Grades can also be combined with additional compounding technologies, such as colour, antistatic or electrical conductivity, while maintaining the materials RoHS compliance.

Applications for Lifoflex FLAM TPE compounds include; connectors, electrical insulation, railway vehicles, cavity wall sockets as well as miscellaneous gasket profiles.
