Creating your TPE World at PDM 2015!

‘Creating your TPE World’, this is the message that ELASTO will be promoting at this year’s PDM exhibition.

“PDM is an important meeting place for the UK’s plastics industry”, commented Dominic Philpot, ELASTO UK managing director. “It brings together all aspects of the supply chain; from designers, to polymer developers, machinery, convertors and end users. By presenting our ‘TPE world’ we aim to showcase the versatility of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and how they can be found in a multitude of objects we use every day“.

ELASTO is part of the HEXPOL TPE group, the international TPE specialist with production operations in UK, Sweden, Germany and China. The focus for ELASTO at the UK show will be a number of TPE developments for the automotive, construction, packaging and medical markets.

The company will present the Dryflex PCW TPE compounds based on Post-Consumer Waste. These materials were developed to address demands in the automotive industry, which is obliged to use increasing quantities of post-consumer waste and operate under the EU ELV Directive to ensure recyclability at the end of each vehicle’s life. The Dryflex PCW compounds contain recyclate consisting of polypropylene drawn from automotive mouldings, which are cleaned and re-ground and rubber tyre crumb from both OEM and after-market tyres. Apart from the obvious benefit of recycling, the material exhibits other advantages when compared with virgin materials particularly its superior UV and weathering resistance and sound reduction properties. The Dryflex PCW compounds are being used in automotive applications such as mud flaps, sidesteps and antidrag lips.

The Mediprene range of TPE compounds was developed for medical device applications. Mediprene TPE compounds are sterilisable with gamma, EtO and steam and representative grades have passed cytotoxicity tests according to ISO 10993-5 and biocompatibility tests according to USP Class VI. Mediprene TPEs have also proven to be strong alternatives as replacement for PVC; they are completely synthetic and latex free thereby minimizing allergy risks. Mediprene TPEs are seeing growing demand in catheter, tubing and syringe plunger seal applications.

Another growing product for ELASTO UK is their Dryflex WS hydrophilic TPE compounds. These compounds swell at a controlled rate and percentage when immersed in water, with swell rates from 300 to 1000%. When there is no longer water present the compound shrinks back to its original size, a process that can be repeated an almost unlimited number of times. The compounds are being used in water stop applications in a number of large scale construction projects.

The PDM exhibition will take place at Telford International Centre, UK 16 & 17 June. ELASTO will be on stand B031.
